Air-cooled chillers can range in size from 7.5–500 tons, while water-cooled chillers can range in size from 10–4,000 tons. Water-cooled chillers are often used in commercial and industrial facilities.

Air conditioning and cooling

The best type of air conditioning system for you depends on the size of the space you want to cool and your climate

  • Central air conditioning: The most efficient way to cool an entire home, central air conditioning systems are a good choice if you have ductwork already installed. They can lower energy bills, improve indoor comfort, and add value to your home.
  • Window units, portable air conditioners, or mini-split systems: These are good options for cooling one or two rooms, or if you need temporary cooling.
  • Geothermal or evaporative air conditioning systems: These systems are good choices in suitable climates.

When choosing an air conditioner, you can also consider the following:

  • A general rule of thumb is that an air conditioner needs about 20–25 BTU for each square foot of living space. If the unit is too strong, you'll waste energy, and if it's too weak, you'll have to run it on full power.
