Football Season is HVAC Season

There's something about the first cool snap of September that reminds Pittsburgh homeowners of two things: football is back, and it's time to think about the furnace. The two go together more than you might think.

Fall is the ideal time to schedule a furnace or boiler tune-up — before the first cold night when you actually need it. HVAC contractors are busiest in the dead of winter when systems are already failing. Scheduling in September or October means shorter wait times and your choice of appointment slots.

A fall tune-up typically includes inspecting the heat exchanger for cracks (a critical safety check — a cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide), cleaning the burners, testing ignition, checking the flue for blockages, and verifying that the system heats to the correct temperature.

It's also a good time to test your carbon monoxide detectors and replace the batteries. CO detectors should be replaced every 5–7 years — check the manufacture date on the back of the unit.

While you're at it, replace your air filter. A fresh filter at the start of heating season ensures good airflow and keeps dust and allergens from circulating through your home during the months when windows stay closed.
